Review (date Aug 23 2003 ):
Granger SQL is a simple program for working with SQL requests. It works under all Windows versions and supports 4 connection types: ADO, ODBC, Oracle(OCI) and MS SQL Server. A direct connection to a MS SQL Server does not work in this version: the connection to MS SQL Server 2000 can be established but viewing the database schema is not possible, at the same time the program notifies that this feature works only with versions MS SQL Server 7.0 and higher. Also, the requests are not performed and one cannot select a database. There are no problems when working via ADO, ODBC or directly with Oracle(OCI). The interface of Granger SQL is intentionally made simple, according to the authors, it was intended for programmers and DBAs who use SQL frequently. In fact, the program interface is next to primitive, which makes the program simply inconvenient. Besides, sometimes the color and size of the font are out of place, but there is no way to change them, there are almost no options for customizing the interface. Services the program offers are also scarce: create a SQL request, perform it, save, open, print out the result (practically without any formatting) or copy it onto the clipboard. Additionally, you can view the database schema as a list and on its base create several variants of requests. In our opinion, an experienced programmer or DBA could use this program and get the necessary result, and the program works really fast, but we cannot understand what is the point of getting rid of all the conveniences, fighting the primitive interface and working manually, when it could be quite easily done automatically. Besides, the program cannot be purchased on-line.
